Cell phone blast kills couple; son injured

Chennai, Jan 26: A cellphone put on charge overnight bursting and a suspected LPG leak resulted in a fire at a house in Vyasarpadi in the early hours of Monday, killing a couple.

The 25-year-old son of the couple, R Dinesh, is undergoing treatment.

When Dinesh’s father Rajendran tried to switch off the alarm he had set on his phone at 5 am, the handset suddenly burst with a loud noise and fire spread in the house. While the family attributed the incident to the phone, put on charge overnight, police suspect an LPG leak inside the house.

"When he tried to reach the phone, the spark from the plug point seems to have triggered the blast and the fire," said an investigating officer.

However, fire and rescue personnel who reached the spot said the LPG cylinder and gas tube were in good condition. "Rajendran told us that the phone burst when he switched off the charger. But, the cylinder, gas tube and regulator are in good condition," said a fire and rescue officer.

While the reason for the fire could not be ascertained immediately, the explosion was so loud that it woke up most of the residents in the locality.

"Around 5 am, I heard a loud blast and ran out of my house. I found glass pieces on the doorstep and on the road. The house was on fire and Rajendran was screaming for help. We immediately poured buckets of water and sand to put of the fire," said K Geetha, who lives in the opposite house in Bhaktavachalam Colony.

Dinesh and his mother Rani (42) were sleeping in the living room. Rajendran, who had come to the hall to pick up the phone, managed to run out. Rajendran, and Rani died in KMC hospital. Dinesh is under treatment.
