Republic Day is not just another holiday for Indians as it marks the replacement of the Government of India Act of 1935 with the Constitution of India. Our constitution is the longest constitution in the world. It was drafted by noted personalities which included Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, Gopalswami Iyengar, TT Krishnamachary, DP Khaitan, Sir Benegal, Kanahaiya lal Munshi and Md. Saadullah.
Both the originally handwritten copies of Indian Constitution are kept in helium-filled cases at the Parliament House Library. It was handwritten by Prem Behari Narain Raizada.

Every year the President of India unfurls the flag with 21 gun salutes as a mark of naval and military honor. The National Anthem is sung simultaneously.
Written in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, our National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana...was first translated into Hindi by Abid Ali in 1911

The Republic Day functions last for 3 days and ends with the Beating Retreat on 29th January. The ceremonial performance of the bands of Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy was started in early 1950's by Major Roberts of the Indian Army.
President Sukarno of Indonesia was the first chief guest at the first Republic Day Celebrations.
