WhatsApp launches new video streaming feature. Here's how it works

WhatsApp's new feature will let you watch shared videos without having to wait for them to fully download first.

WhatsApp is on a roll when it comes to introducing interesting features. Just a week after launching its much-awaited video calling feature, WhatsApp has introduced another video related feature. This new feature basically lets you watch a shared video while it is being downloaded to your phone. At the time of filing this story, the feature is only available on WhatsApp beta version 2.16.365.

Earlier when someone would share a video, you would either get a download button or it would automatically download to your phone based on your settings. But in both the scenarios, one could only watch the video once the download is completed. Now however, instead of a download button, you see a play button.

When you tap the button, the video will start buffering, and you will be able to watch the video while it is being downloaded on your phone. The buffering feature is similar to what you see when watching videos online. This new WhatsApp feature was first spotted on the beta app by The YourStory

While it may not necessarily be a feature that you could not live without, it surely saves you some time that you would otherwise spend waiting for the video to download.

To use this feature, you will have to download the latest WhatsApp beta app that you can get on the Play Store. You will however have to first enroll in the company's beta program. It is likely that WhatsApp would release this feature on the final version soon.

Videos are clearly the way forward for Facebook and the companies it owns, like Instagram and WhatsApp. After a lot of requests, WhatsApp finally introduced video calling feature on its Android, iOS and Windows Phone apps.

We spent some time using the new video calling feature and despite suffering from some performance issues, it is still a welcome feature. The company boasts that the feature is optimized to work even when the network quality is not the best.

Don't accept this invite on WhatsApp, it can hack your phone

With WhatsApp launching its video calling facility last week spammers have decided to take control of the facility by creating a fake website.

WhatsApp users began receiving an invitation spam message that reads, "You're invited to try WhatsApp Video Calling feature. Only people with the invitation can enable this feature". On clicking the link, users are directed to a webpage where they are given an option to download the feature. And once you click on the link, it takes you to a website, which appears to be believable though it is a spam.

Even to the most observant of the techie's the webpage seems to be highly promising.

And when you click on the 'enable' tab, you will be directed to a new page which requires user verification. You would then be asked to share and invite four other friends to enable this feature through the same link. Too many clicks on the page attracts yourself to spammers and hacking.

The right way to enable video calling feature is to update your WhatsApp app through your Google Playstore or Apple Store. As soon as it is updated, the feature will be automatically enabled on your device.

Take note, these smartphones won't run WhatsApp after Dec 31

WhatsApp has revealed that it will be stopping support for a number of devices by the end of this year. Before smartphones, Nokia's Symbian was one of the most dominating operating system in the phone market. Despite featuring on legendary Nokia devices, the operating system seems to be coming to an absolute end very soon.

The most popular instant messaging application, WhatsApp has released a statement mentioning the operating systems that won't receive support from the company after the end of 2016. The announcement was made back in February this year.

The Facebook-owned company believes that the technology needed to incorporate the latest features and security within the app is not available on these operating systems. The blog post stated, "while these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future."

These are the operating systems that will not have access to Whatsapp after December 31:

BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10

Nokia S40

Nokia Symbian S60

Android 2.1 and Android 2.2

Windows Phone 7.1

iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

The instant messaging company recommended upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.

WhatsApp's video call feature is now live on these phones!

WhatsApp is one of the many applications which is frequently updated and more and more new features are pushed. Previously we saw how the app was updated with the public group features. The application was also recently updated with new camera improvements as well. Interestingly, one thing to note here is the fact that all these new features were pushed to Android OS first before the others. But now the latest new feature which the company has to offer is now being pushed to Windows platform first.

The new feature we are talking about here is the Video calling feature. Undoubtedly this is one of the most requested features of the bunch and was expected by many for a long time now. But as mentioned earlier, instead of pushing this new feature to Android, just like they used to do, the company has now made this new video calling feature available to the Windows platform. This new feature i.e. te video call feature is enabled by default in WhatsApp for Windows Phone.

If you didn’t know already, the developers of the app just pushed the 2.16.260 beta update for the platform, and it looks like the video call feature was readily available for users to make use of it. And the way this works also makes it very usable in any given condition. When you click on menu for making a call from within the contact, instead of showing just the option for the voice call, now you also have an option to make a video call from the same menu.

Alternatively, when you click and expand a contact to view more details, there also an option for making a video is now available for users. It looks like the video calling feature is baked right into the app for easy access. And this will work exactly how one would make a voice call. Tap on the video call, and it would connect to the user on the other end. And all the call history will be shown together under the call history. If you miss a call, then it will be notified just like if you would miss a voice call.

The fact that the feature is now live is refreshing but since it is only available for Windows phone now is the major issue for other platform users at least. But considering the fact that majority of WhatsApp users would be either on Android or iOS platform, we will not be surprised to see them rolling out the feature soon to other platforms as well. Previously the same feature was made available for Android and the APK was also available to download, but the feature didn’t work well. With that being said, let’s just wait and see when the other platforms will get the update on this.

Two arrested in Delhi for sharing pornographic content on WhatsApp

The Delhi police have arrested two men for allegedly uploading porn images and jokes on the phone messaging app WhatsApp.

The two, one of whom was the administrator of the group, were arrested on the complaint of a woman advocate and have been booked on charges of outraging a woman’s modesty. They were sent to judicial custody by a city court but were later released on bail, after they furnished their bail bonds.

The two accused have been identified as Manoj and Kuldeep. A senior police officer said that Manoj had not uploaded any porn videos or images on the WhatsApp group but was responsible for adding Kuldeep to the group and not removing him despite the woman’s complaint.

The woman in her complaint to the Saket police station alleged that she was added to a WhatsApp group by one of her relatives some months ago. The accused had then added some of their common friends and a few of his friends. She alleged that one morning when she woke up she had received over 10 messages on that group and one of the members had sent obscene photographs and adult jokes.

“Her complaint states that on receiving the messages, she first ignored the messages but when the same person kept sending adult jokes that were in bad taste and offending pictures, it became a nuisance and she called the PCR and reported the matter to the police,” a senior police officer said.

Furthermore the woman said that the accused Kuldeep had used ‘vulgar language’ in conversations and appeared to be a pervert which prompted her to report him to the police. Police said that on receiving the woman’s complaint they registered a case at the Saket Police station,

“As evidence we accessed her chat details and snapshots of the messages the man had sent. Since the chat had the phone number, we sent a team to his address and made the arrest. He was arrested on Tuesday,” police said.

Scientists achieving speeds of 224 gigabits per second in the lab using Li-Fi technology – IBTIMES

What is LiFi?

.

LiFi can transfer data through LED lights and it 100 times faster than wifi we used today in our home.

LiFi is working like WiFi, but it uses LED bulbs rather than radio bands and waves.

Who Invented Li-Fi?

The Li-Fi technology was invented by German physicist Harald Haas in 2011.

.
.

How LiFi works?

LiFi works by flashing LED lights on and off at incredibly fast speeds, sending data to a receiver in binary code.

It’s essentially an ultra-fast version of turning your flashlight on and off to create morse code.

The flashes occur so fast that they are not seen by the naked eye. All one need to do is fit
a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities illumination and wireless data transmission.

Harold Haas, one of the inventors of Li-Fi technology, has previously said that in the future every LED light bulb could potentially be used as an ultra-fast alternative to Wi-Fi.

“We have the infrastructure there,” Haas said in a TED Talk demonstrating Li-Fi. “We can use them for communications.

“All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission.

“In the future we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion Li-Fi’s deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener and even a brighter future.”
